Game Two
Mitchell
advances as Young four-hits Yankton

Jason Schmidt (9) is greeted by his teammates after
hitting a solo home run in the 8th inning.
ABERDEEN -- Brett Young prevailed in
a match-up of two of the state's premiere pitchers in opening round
action of the 2008 South Dakota State American Legion Class 'A'
Tournament, as Mitchell beat Yankton and Layne Somsen 8-1. Young
scattered four hits in his complete-game victory, while only allowing
one run, and striking out six. Young retired twelve of the last thirteen
batters he faced, including the last seven in a row.
Somsen and Young both set the tone early on the mound, as
neither team scored through the first five innings. Mitchell would come
up with four runs in the sixth, thanks in large part to two Yankton
errors and a wild pitch. After striking out looking in his first two
at-bats, Jason Schmidt stroked a two-run, line-drive single to center
field that gave Mitchell its first lead of the day. Schmidt would later
add a solo home run in the 8th inning to seal the victory for Mitchell.
Somsen finished the game with 13 strikeouts before being
relieved in the eighth inning.
Mitchell will advance to play the winner of the
Aberdeen/Sioux Falls West game at 7:30 PM tomorrow night, while Yankton
will face the loser of that match-up in an elimination game at 12:30 PM
Thursday.
